Housing in the Local Community
Immediately upon your arrival at Minot AFB, sign into your gaining unit and then visit the Housing Management Office (HMO). The HMO provides all DoD personnel with personalized services to assist in locating suitable housing in the local community. Although moving is sometimes stressful, it can also be an exciting opportunity to live off base and experience a new location. The HMO will assist you every step of the way to help you find your new home in the local community.

Housing Services
Contact your local HMO as soon as you know you are moving. The government housing team will provide you the latest information on the local housing situation and offer complete referral services and relocation assistance to make sure you find a quality place to live.

Support services range from helping members understand their lease agreements and the necessity for a military release clause to assisting in resident and landlord dispute resolution, among many others. The base Legal Office provides one-on-one counseling and review of leases as requested.

The HMO partners with landlords, realtors and property managers to make sure you receive the most current information about the local housing market. The HMO also monitors housing units offered for rent to the military community, which are listed in the Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN), a joint service, DoD-sponsored website that offers a 24/7/365 single source of available housing to incoming military personnel and their families.

Go to AHRN.com and create a personal account to view the available housing and get a feel for the size, style and type of housing around your new installation. The listings provide contact information for the landlord or property manager so you can connect with them to discuss available units. Contact the HMO prior to making any firm commitments.

Community Housing Units
Minot AFB is located in north central Ward County. The main areas of population are to the south of the base. The City of Minot has approximately 42,285 people, the town of Surrey has 987 people, Glenburn has 390 people and the town of Burlington has approximately 1,102 people. Our housing referral personnel can provide you current rental rates for the area. As of December 2012, the average rental rate for a two bedroom apartment was between $1,100-$1,600.

For information about the housing allowances that financially support your move, see Referral and Relocation Assistance.

Personal Property Insurance
You are encouraged to obtain legal liability and personal property insurance for your possessions and you should choose the options and amounts that best fit your needs and lifestyle. Before purchasing your insurance, please consult the HMO for more information about coverage.

School Information
For families, we understand that where your children attend school plays a large factor in the decision of where to live. For your convenience, all community housing listings in the Automated Housing Referral Network site (AHRN.com) include a link to schools in the area surrounding the listed house.

Pets
It is strongly suggested that you leave your pets with family or friends during your transition to Minot AFB until you have secured housing. The availability of pet friendly rentals in the Minot and surrounding communities is very limited. Approximately 1% of the total rentals are considered pet friendly. Even when a rental is pet friendly, there may be limitations to the breed, size, type of pet, and number of pets you may have. Landlords and property managers may charge a one time "pet fee" that is non refundable. It is also recommended that you contact the local community to determine prohibited pets.
